My experiences in being a life long student and a teachers assistant while working towards my undergraduate degree have greatly affected my teaching philosophy. I strongly believe that as a teacher of any subject it is extremely important that you cater to your students different learning styles to the best of your abilities. It is my job to not only present the information, but to facilitate life long learning, encourage study skills, and introduce students to the subject of science and explain its connection to the world.

As a teacher I would like to make my approach to the material and learning in general as fun as possible. It is important to me to be able show my students that even though the material can be dry at times if they take a different approach to learning it can be fun. I would do this by incorporating a lot of experiments, field trips, and hands on activities as possible into my lessons. This would give them the chance to really experience, handle, and assess with their own two hands. I strongly believe that you learn better when you are able to do things in your classroom and not just listen and take notes.

In my classroom I want to ask more questions of my students than give answers, and have them take more responsibility in their own learning. I would do this by having both individual and group projects and presentations be a part of how I assess them. This gives them the chance to work together to solve a problem or present new information to their classmates. In their individual projects they will be able to show me that they are able to take responsibility in their own learning since they alone are held accountable for the final product.

Most importantly I want my students to be able to build upon what they already know and use each other as resources. Before any new information is presented I will give my students a questionnaire that will assess what level they are at with the material. Based on those results I will give them an appropriate review of the basics that will lead into the new material. I would also make small groups for discussion after the lesson so students can learn from each other and spark new ideas in each others minds.

I want to be the teacher that my students always look back on with respect because I taught them things that they will never forget. I want my classroom to be based on teamwork, fun, togetherness, community, with a strong foundation of knowledge to tie it all together. I think I can do this by always being approachable, open, nice, and understanding of my students. I will offer them academic guidance and hopefully be able to leave a lasting impression on them.
